The story line takes a dramatically different turn as Simon loses a friend, who also is his boss, to an eventing accident - on a horse he was supposed to ride, but couldn't, due to recent medical treatment. Now he is trying to help Catherine, newly widowed and parent of three young children, continue with her hunter-jumper part of the barn, and wondering where he will be going with his future.His boyfriend has broken up with him and is in the process of moving to Colorado. The nice home they had assembled together is going to be pieced out between them, and Simon goes back to living on pizza and whatever happens to be lying around.
You really need to read the previous books so that you'll understand how we arrived at this stage in the game. The young man who can ride tough horses is now maturing a bit in his career - but there probably won't be a place for him in Catherine's barn. She isn't interested in eventing, and wants to steer her kids away from the sport, particularly after it took her husband away.
We do get to find out a little of what it's like to go to one of those big flashy horse shows with lots of vendors and sponsors and even some actual spectators. It's how the other fraction lives - I can't say the other half, because certainly most of the horse world isn't like this.
I love this series and can't wait to find out what happens next.

I absolutely adored reading this series! Simon, the protagonist, is a multi-dimensional character who grows by leaps and bounds over the span of the series narrative. While a lot of fiction feels formulaic, and tends to follow a three act structure, these books feel more true to life, as they chronicle the life of a talented and determined young equestrian. The author has built a character who feels like a real person, and the action isn't wrought with melodrama- a trap that many equestrian fiction authors fall into! Simon has his insecurities and his demons, but I love that he doesn't waste time fretting over what people say or write about him. He's a character I can relate to, despite the fact that our lives couldn't be more different, and reading this series is like taking a vacation in the life and mind of another person. In short, this is another fantastic work of fiction by this author!

This series continues to get better with each book. I look forward to many more eventing novels from Mary Pagones.
I love this author. All three of the Fortune' Fool books are very enjoyable as is her other book, The Horse is Never Wrong. I hope Simon's story continues and look forward to reading more books by Mary Pagones.
Mary Pagones brings this series home beautifully with Simon learning to face life, experience all its emotions, and make them his own. Plenty of horse show and eventing drama keep this firmly rooted in the equestrian genre, even while embracing the real world.
The continuing saga of Simon and the very real portrayal of eventing and hunter-jumper showing certainly doesn't disappoint. It's a great read that leaves me wanting more.
Simon has to grow up quickly when his friend and mentor is killed in an eventing accident. As he struggles to cope with his feelings for his friend, he also struggles with some health issues and personal challenges. This third (and I hope not final) book takes us even deeper into the mind of a top-notch rider. Pagones has hit her stride with this account of a less than likable character. I suppose no one reaches the top of a competitive world by being a nice guy, and yet I find myself rooting for Simon. He needs a good horse and a good man to make his life complete.
